10th January 2010 from a very very cold Scotland
Jan Merks has been emailing me again. Apparently he decided to start insulting me again on his web pages. His presentation at APCOM 2009 seems to have given him new impetus in his fight against the evils of geostatistics. I promised myself in 1993 that I would not respond to his calumnies since doing so is an exercise in futility. However, after being accused of "scolding" I felt I should reach out one last time. You can find our two sets of correspondence at:
To Jan Merks December 1993

.

To Jan Merks January 2010
Do you find it interesting that he attends APCOM for the first time ever when it is in his home town -
and only attends the session where he presents his own paper?
Do you find it interesting that he talked to his wife all
through every other presentation during that session?
Do you find it interesting that he and his wife spoke to no-one else
while they were there?
Well, I was right about the futility part. Got a reply within seconds - no words just the same old incomprehesible spreadsheet slagging off geostatistics and (for some even more incomprehensible reason) our free "kriging game" which illustrates how kriging works...

Clackmannanshire is sheltered by the Ochils which rise from sea level to 2000 feet or so in a very short distance. The "back side" of our hills are much less steep and slope northwards into Pethshire. Most snow gets deposited on the Perth side before it gets to us, so we have not suffered as badly as (say) Fife which ran out of grit last week and is now buying from Africa!! We do, however, get the cold. Tomorrow they predict the temperature will rise (temporarily) to 0 degrees C. Then another 3 weeks of Russian weather............ Surfing around our local web site, I found the photo competition. Take a look at http://www.clacksweb.org.uk/photocomp/comp.php?action=view to see why I still like living here..................... There is still time to do good and contribute at Audun's charity page for Muscular Dystrophy. He is walking the Wall of China (not all of it!) in March for Tesco's current charity effort. Getting lots of enquiries about courses in 2010, which is great but keep 'em coming. Looks like I will be in Reno first week in March and open for bookings -- seminars, one-on-one training, no job too small! Other enquiries are for: in-house course Abu Dhabi (April), in-house course Nevada (March), open course in Abu Dhabi (October) and (of course) the Edumine BYOGe courses in Vancouver (May and possibly October). Also some one-on-one training at various venues. Conferences next year include CIM in Vancouver (May), Environmental Health in San Diego (March) and the new Latin American geostatistics effort in Cuba (June). And I am hoping to finally get to see Gavin and Eugene's new house in Melbourne. If anyone can use a geostats guru in Australia in April please (please!) let me know. I can offer 1-to-1 training at very reasonable prices. Watch out for Practical Geostatistics 2010 -- the sequel -- coming soon to an Amazon page near you..........................
